Greater St. Louis has an extraordinary concentration of world-class plant & biomedical scientists, making it a world leader in academic and corporate bioscience research and development.   Our region has a long history of medical breakthroughs which includes leading the international effort to map the human genome. St. Louis is home to major multinational companies, bio venture capital funds and a robust pipeline of emerging enterprises in bioscience and other advanced technologies.

The initiative to further grow and develop this vital subsector of the Health Science & Services industry is driven by BioSTL, a regional organization created to champion St. Louis bioscience. In 2011, BioSTL, which evolved from the Coalition for Plant and Life Sciences, announced a $30 million commitment, over five years, from Washington University in St. Louis, BJC HealthCare and the St. Louis Life Sciences Project to forward bioscience company creation and drive economic growth in St. Louis. These funds have increased the region’s capacity to support entrepreneurs and launch BioSTL as a collective effort to increase economic activity in the bioscience arena.
